So, tonight was our Detroit ICCA Chapter meeting.  It's being held at Microsoft's office in Southfield.  I have to drive around 2 hours to get there.  I normally leave around 2:45 or 3:00 so I can get to our board meeting which normally starts at 5:00pm.  I live in southern Michigan (about 5 miles north of the Indiana border), so I normally take I69 north to I96 east when I go to Detroit.  It's the simplest route, even though there are other routes that may take less time.

We woke up to extremely dense fog.  It didn't start clearing up until after 2 this afternoon.  I decided that I wasn't going to drive the 2 hours (one way) to the meeting because when the weather is bad, it's just not worth risking life and limb to make a meeting like this.  I almost changed my mind when I saw the fog starting to clear around 3pm because I already missed the last two meetings.

Anyway, so around 4pm, I checked The Drudge Report to see if there was any news worth reading about.  Lo and behold, I saw this: 50 car pile-up on I-96 between Lansing and Detroit...

YIKES!

I just checked Drudge and it's now up to 100 car pile-up.  Based on what I could gather, the accident happened around 4pm.  That's just about the time I would have been driving through the area!

I'm glad I went with my gut and not my head.

Edit: January 12, 2005 @ 8:44pm. - I just found out that the first accident occurred around 3pm (about the time I would have been leaving my house which is an hour away from the pile-up).  I still feel good about my decision not to go.
