Oh man...so, for the past 6 months (since I started), the company I work for has been building a new “technology center”. Basically, they gutted a portion of our existing building and built a new data center along with office space.
Last Friday, our department (IT) moved in. Let me just say that I was ready to quit on the spot. :-| While the majority of IT is in an enclosed area with pretty big cubicles, the web developer and I are stuck OUTSIDE of the main IT area. Our cubes are smaller and we have 0 privacy. We've been promised some kind of partition that will close off the foot traffic and the noise from another department that also moved into the new area.
It took at least 30 minutes for me to calm down enough to NOT quit on the spot. Of course, the people that decided on the work spaces have no clue what we do....oh yea....they also have private offices. :-\ Have I mentioned that I'd love to get back to working for myself? ;-) Luckily, we moved in around 4pm on Friday, so by the time I had calmed down, it was time to go home.
We got some really cool Cisco IP phones, although our executive team has better phones (why is it that execs feel the need to have better stuff?). We're supposed to be installing “soft“ phones soon, although I can't see myself ever using it.
On Saturday, the network guys called me in to help move all of our servers to the new data center. I spent about 5 hours helping them put servers in racks, cabling the servers and attaching them to KVMs. Overall, it was kinda fun to get my hands dirty.
Today went well. We only had a few minor issues, most of them easily fixed.
Oh, I should mention that my boss (the CIO) and the VP of HR talked to the web guy and I about our workspace. If it turns out there's too much noise, we can move to another location on the other side of the building. That would really suck. It sucks being 20 feet from everyone else in our department, I know the suck would only increase if we moved to another part of the building. We're going to try to stick it out for now.
