It's been about two years since we started the chapter. I remember getting a phone call shortly after I joined the ICCA at the National level. They said they wanted to open a chapter in Detroit, but they needed one more person to commit to joining the chapter before they had enough. After talking to the National Director and one or two of the "founding" members, I decided to join, even though it meant a long drive to get to the meetings.
A few weeks into it, I became the "web master" after the original person decided he couldn't dedicate the time necessary to getting the site up-and-running. He had a good excuse; big projects that were bringing him a lot of $$$. :-) I jumped right in and created the site that's been up since. I have made some changes since the original design, but for the most part, it's the same.
Less than a year into it, the first president of the chapter decided he wanted to move his company in a different direction and resigned. The sitting vice president took over and I was "elected" vice president of the chapter. I held
that position until a week or two ago when I decided to let my membership lapse (mainly because I don't have time now that I'm working as a W2 employee).
It's been a struggle every step of the way to get people to attend our meetings. We've tried everything; business-focused meetings, technical meetings and round-table discussions. Nothing worked. Well, I just received some email letting me know it's being closed due to several factors, the biggest being lack of attendance.
It's a bit of a bummer to see the chapter close, but I'm not sure what else we could have done to keep it going. I'll definitely miss seeing the members that have been there since the start: Jeff Lipshaw from AFL Computer Consulting,
Lynette Rudzki from Rudzki Technologies and Gloria Metrick from GeoMetrick Consulting.
At some point in the very near future, the site will be coming down. I'm going to try to post something on the site so people don't think we just disappeared. :-(
