Wow...3 weeks since I've posted anything...that's not cool.
I've been trying to get healthy, but that's been tough since noone else in the house is healthy yet. Between the flu, my pneumonia and other bugs, it's been a sucky month. Hopefully we're just about over it all though.
I wrapped up the Access / Excel project, mainly because the client (remember, I was a sub-sub-contractor on this one) didn't know exactly what they wanted. They had people manually gathering the same data my app was supposed to, so when my app was delivered, they didn't really need it. This kinda bugs me for the obvious reason that *someone* should have known this was happening and let me know. That's ok though because the guy I was working for was happy with my work and has left the door open for future engagements. :-)
My other project (.NET 2 / ASP.NET) is really cruising along, although I don't feel like I've been able to give it my all yet due to being sick, etc. I've been working on some bugs, some tough, some not so tough. The project, so far, has been the most well-organized, well-documented project I've been a part of in a *long* time. As it goes, I'm having far more fun doing this than I ever had at the job I left in January. I've been hearing stories of the complete and utter BS that's been going on and it makes me glad I quit.
From the sounds of it, they're gonna *outsource* work to somewhere in Russia. While I have nothing against Russians (well...at least not until I watch Rocky IV or Red Dawn), this seems like such a bad idea. Hell, they couldn't even work successfully with a consulting firm an hour away, I'm not sure how they're gonna deal with developers in another time zone. :-\ Grr...what a bunch of idiots. The “boss“ thinks he's gonna “integrate“ the Russians into the team. How the hell he expects to do that is beyond me considering he's been “heads down“ working on a single report for the last 2 years. ;-)
I also heard that a developer they hired a month after I left quit last week. ;-) Good for him. That place, while it had great potential, is severely dysfunctional. The turnover in that place (especially IT) is really high (since last October, 6 people have gone on to bigger and better things - the company only has 170 people!). The reason, as far as I can tell, is that he couldn't work with the boss (remember...the boss is the CIO). I can definitely feel his pain. I wish I could get in touch with the guy that quit to get his side of the story and to let him know he made the right decision.
BTW, why does every freakin' site on the planet want me to install Flash today!
I've been playing World of Warcraft in my free time (when I'm not working, playing with the kids, spending time with my wife, etc.). I'm at level 38 (human rogue) now. :-) Two more levels until I get my mount (horse)!
