I think this type of thing must happen several times a year....

PC Magazine has recently come out with their list of “Incredibly Useful Utilities”.  They did that stupid one utility per page (click Next...) crap....grrrrrr...

Anyway, while there list was ok, I thought I'd post my list of useful utils:

1. 4NT - awesome replacement for cmd.exe.  I'm going to look at Monad soon, but I've been a happy user of 4NT since the late 90s.
2. ViM/gViM - the best text editor.  A learning curve, but a great tool once you learn the ins-and-outs.
3. WinZip - the old stand-by.  I registered my copy a looooonnnnggg time ago.
4. Trillian - Great IM client.
5. HyperSnap-DX - This is the best screen-capture utility I've found.  I'm also a fan of their HyperCam product.
6. BCL easyPDF - A PDF print driver.  I print to PDF alot and this is the best driver I've found (yea...I tried the free Ghostscript crap...)
7. DocClear - this is my own creation for managing the Documents menu (and some other stuff).  Originally written in 97', I updated it last year with some new features.
8. Copernic Desktop Search - Not sure how I lived before this app.  I should probably give the MSN Google products a try at some point.
9. Lookout - Outlook without Lookout sucks. :-)
10. Spambayes - It'd be nice if they'd update this one...but it's one of the best spam filters I've found.
11. AVG Free - great virus scanner
12. Foxit Reader - replacement for that big, nasty, bloated Acrobat Reader.
13. SmartFTP - great FTP client, although the nags get old...I suppose I should buy it.

I'll post my list of useful, gotta-have apps later.

Updated: 3/28/2006 @ 6:27pm (EST) - added some utils I missed in the first round.
